"The responsibility of the artist consists in perfecting [their] work so that it may become attractively disinteresting” JOHN CAGE
The material presented here has emerged out of nascent attempts at developing a performance-based practice. This interest in improvisation, comes after maybe, too many years of being a slave to the compositional 'idea' - though in truth, my predilection has always been for sounds sensual properties rather than their symbolic potential.
Using an array of sonic objects, I have explored, allowing this process to assert itself over any predetermined thoughts. At the same time, I have experimented with being mindful of, and being guided by, evocations of other more far flung, experiences. This could be contradictory, but I have found it fruitful.
All field recordings and performances are mine with the sole exception of the titular track where I used a short, looped sample from a live outdoor performance of a composition by Neil T Smith. Neil (flute) was was recorded in the middle of Trinity Tunnel in Edinburgh and the loop consists of a slow phrase and a very active, vocalising child.
For me, this release marks an interesting new beginning, but I hope that it also provides an attractively disinteresting listen!
